Dr. Mark Slaughter is Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Louisville and Director of the Mechanical Assist Device and Heart Transplant Program.

For more than 16 years, he has been a practicing cardiovascular surgeon with extensive clinical experience in implantation and treating clinical patients with mechanical circulatory support devices.

Dr. Slaughter has performed over 140 implants of various ventricular assist device systems since October 1999, including Thoratec PVAD, Thoratec IVAD, HeartMate XVE, HeartMate II, Tandem Heart, ORQIS and Biomedicus. Dr. Slaughter has participated in the clinical trials of the Thoratec TLC-II for Home Discharge, the Thoratec IVAD and most recently, the HeartMate XVE AMI Trial and the HeartMate II pivotal trial.

Dr. Slaughter also has extensive animal experience working with mechanical circulatory support devices for research and training.
